What is Athlete's Foot

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection involving the foot. It can manifest on the sole of the foot or in between the toes .

Causes

Athlete’s foot often occurs in warm environments when feet tend to sweat more. Fungus typically thrives in areas that are damp such as swimming pools, showers and locker rooms. Additionally, fungus can be found in wet shoes, whether from sweat, rain or stepping in water, that were never properly dried. Sharing shoes, clothing and a shower with someone who has fungus can cause transmission of fungus .

Symptoms

Itchy, dry, scaling skin on the sole of the foot or in between the toes
Cracks and blisters

Prevention

Avoid walking barefoot and practice good foot hygiene. Feet should be cleaned with soap and water daily and thoroughly dried, including in between the toes. Feet and shoes should be kept as dry as possible.

Treatment

Anti-fungal creams
Anti-perspirant sprays, powders for sweaty feet
Anti-fungal sprays for shoes
Oral anti-fungal medication
