Drop Foot

What is A Drop Foot

Drop foot refers to the inability or weakened ability to move the ankle upwards. This affects the ability to properly lift the foot upward when walking resulting in scuffing or dragging of the foot or lifting of the entire lower extremity.

Cause

Foot drop is caused by a disorder, damage or impingement of the nerve the innervates the tibialis anterior muscle/tendon, which comes across the front of the ankle, or damage to the muscle/tendon itself. A central nervous system disorder including strokes can also cause a drop foot .

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause of the drop foot. For cases where drop foot is caused by a central nervous system disorder, the central nervous disorder must be properly managed. For cases where there is a disorder, damage or impingement of the nerve the innervates the tibialis anterior muscle/tendon, the location of where this occurs is important to distinguish how this can be treated.

Non-surgical

  •  Bracing
  • Physical therapy
  • Electrical nerve stimulation

Surgical

  • Nerve repair or decompression depending on where the nerve damage is,
  • Tendon/muscle repair
  • Tendon transfers
  • Ankle fusion
