An ingrown nail is when the nail curves and grows into the skin on the side of the nail. The nail digs into the skin, causing pain, redness, swelling and eventually an infection.
Treatment will vary based on severity of the ingrown nail as well as if there is presence of an infection. Sometimes removing just the corner of the nail will provide relief, but often times, the ingrown returns. An in office procedure can be down to remove part of the nail’s side border under local anesthesia. Sometimes, the nail root may have to be fully removed or cauterized to prevent regrowth of that portion of nail to prevent recurrence.
Soaking with Epsom salt can decrease inflammation of the nail and skin which may temporarily relieve some of the discomfort.
