Metatarsalgia is defined as pain to the metatarsal bones which are the long bones that lead up to the toes. Usually the pain is under the 2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsals. The pain is due to either a metatarsal that is longer then the others or lower than normal causing increased pressure on the metatarsal head. Metatarsalgia can be a result various different ailments in the foot.

If nonsurgical treatment fails to adequately relieve pain and improve stability, surgery may be needed. Often times, treating the underlying condition causing the metatarsalgia will relieve the pain. In some cases, cutting and repositioning the bone is necessary.
